Dinosaur Mini Unit

March 19, 2020 by Side By Side Learning

Having four kids myself, I am still in shock by the love of kids have for a dinosaurs. Is it the mystery, the colors, their size or the coolness factor? I’m not sure. What I do know is that if I can incorporate Dinosaurs into any lesson I find success, its like magic.

Let’s jump into our time machine and discover the wonders of Dinosaurs. Your kids are going to love this unit and I bet you will too.

Usborne Books About Dinosaurs

You can never have too many books, or so I tell my husband. Usborne has done an absolutely fabulous job at teaching all about dinosaurs with their books. Here are our families personal favorites.

Peep Inside: Dinosaurs

My Very First Dinosaurs Book

Wipe Clean: Dinosaur Activities

Little First Stickers: Dinosaur

Dinosaur Quizzes

Big Book of Dinosaurs

First Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life

See Inside: The World of Dinosaurs

Activities to Teach About Dinosaurs

Whether you have big kids or little ones you can find a dinosaur themed activity to keep hands busy and minds creating. I gave you a variety of activities to choose from so that you can decide which one fits your home best. I suggest doing one or two a day max but if you want to do more or extend your dinosaur exploration then please do!

Paper Plate Dinosaur Mask

Build a Dinosaur with Shapes

Dinosaur Alphabet Dot-to-Dot

Counting Dinosaur Mini Book

Dinosaur Movement Dice

Paleontology Cards

Word Search

Kids Art Hub – Drawing Dinosaurs

Dinosaur YouTube Video Clips

I adore YouTube for it’s educational content. We don’t always stick to obviously educational content but I do enjoy using it to teach while providing me a much needed break. Do you need a 5 minute break, 20 minute break or even longer? I have just the video to keep your kids engaged while you do whatever Mom life stuff you need to do. I highly encourage Dr. Pepper and a good book but take this time to do what brings sanity into your life.

Storybots – Dinosaur Playlist

Dinosaur Train

Dr. Binocs – Dinosaurs

SciShow Kids – Dig Into Paleontology

Dino Trails – Royal Tyrell Museum

National Geographic – Dinosaur Documentary Channel

Science Experiments

Let’s get to the fun hands on stuff. You may not think these are entirely dinosaur related and that’s fine. It’s not so easy to find experiments about creatures that have been gone for so long but these are all wonderful experiments that get your kids thinking, asking questions and involved.

Salt Dough Fossils for Sensory Bin Excavation

Disappearing Egg Shell

Dinosaur Ice Excavation

Don't worry this kid knows about it and carried us through a brief lesson. When I asked him how he knew, he answer was simple. "Mom, I read a lot of books."

Thanks library for filling the gaps in this kids education.
