Doctrine and Covenants 10-11 Expanded Study

January 29, 2021 by Side By Side Learning

I am loving putting together these weekly devotionals together for you. As we continue I am able to notice some wonderful patterns that help us repeat lessons or build on concepts we have already started to understand. This week Doctrine and Covenants has led us to talking about the deception of Satan, the power of prayer, finding strength in family (especially siblings) and more. Join us for another wonderful week.

Monday

Memorize Doctrine and Covenants 10:5

Read Doctrine and Covenants 10:1-33

Satan is so good at twisting our efforts and distracting us from the Lord’s work. He will do anything to stop the progression of the gospel. During today’s reading we will learn about the lost pages and Satan’s plan to discredit the scriptures. Let’s focus today on how to we can stay in the safe zone by following warning and promptings from the Holy Ghost.Last week, we learned about personal revelation and how we feel the Holy Ghost. This is a great step to know why we listen and how we need to develop our skills so that we cannot be tricked by Satan.

Prayer is a tool that we have been given by Heavenly Father. Prayer allows us to speak directly to God and also helps us slow down in order to listen to promptings. Satan doesn’t want us to pray because he knows it unlocks God’s power. A great cross reference to make would be Doctrine and Covenants 10:5 to 2 Nephi 32:8.

Hyrum Smith and Joseph Smith had such a special bond as brothers. They loved each other, supported one another and served the Lord together. In Doctrine and Covenants 11 you will read about a special revelation given to Hyrum. I wanted to spend some time this week building our kids relationships as siblings.

The world is especially heavy right now. There is a lot on everyone’s shoulders and often it seems to much to bear. As an adult I know that all things are possible through Christ and I have some good tools to help me recharge but honestly, I still find myself struggling. Today we are going to help our kids start developing habits to help them recharge. I am not going to give you a script to read off but here are some ideas that I received from families on Instagram.

Earlier this week we learned about Satan and how he distracts or confuses us. We are using this as a springboard into learning about camouflage found in nature. The animals that use camouflage is found in predators and in prey. This week we will be focusing on predators, making this the perfect opportunity to talk about how Satan is always trying to trick us into being captured or attacks when we think we are safe. Satan is highly skilled in mimicry which makes him exceptionally dangerous. (On a side note, don’ t look up hidden predators, it is all about child predators.)

The kids are excited about the change but what they really are pumped about is these shelves.

None of these items are new but having them displayed increases their appeal.

What is actually here? For a walk through, jump into my stories and if you want a homeschool room tour you can find it in the highlights.

Reaching goals takes hard work and determination. Reaching goals takes hard work and determination. Two character traits I am working at helping my kids develop.

One thing we recently changed was instead of just doing what's next we made a chart of lessons we have in our books and each child decided when they wanted to finish their school year.

We divided our lessons up to see what they needed to accomplish each week to reach their goal. Then I let them pick 2 rewards, one for the middle and one for completing their level.

Today, this cutie met her middle mark ahead of the schedule she choose because she wanted to. For the last two weeks she has asked to do lessons instead of fighting me and she did 2-5 lessons a day!!!

Being able to check off what she needed to accomplish and working towards a fun project was just the boost she needed.

How does your family teach goals? Do you have rewards? If yes, what rewards do you have?
We spend a lot of time in books but one thing we h We spend a lot of time in books but one thing we haven't learned about yet is how books are made.

This week we are going to take the opportunity to learn about the printing press, Gutenberg and the first publication of the Book of Mormon.
