Joseph Smith History and Doctrine and Covenants 2 Expanded Study

January 9, 2021 by Side By Side Learning Leave a Comment

Sometimes I forget that the Doctrine and Covenants doesn’t have a solid story line. It kinda jumps from revelation to revelation which isn’t a bad thing but it can make it a tad tricky to follow along. Last week Joseph Smith was 14 praying in a grove of trees and this week he is getting married. Time either flies in the Doctrine and Covenants or there are multiple sections covered in a very short time. This week we meet Angel Moroni, learn about the priesthood, corn and marriage, specifically eternal marriage made possible by the sealing ordinances in the temple. Its a big one but don’t worry we are going to still make it fun and engaging.

Replace your name activity inspired by Joseph Smith History 1:33 and discuss why we are on the earth now.

I am going to paraphrase this verse for my kids, feel free to use this words or adapt to your needs.

The angel called me Lindsey (insert your child’s name),

and said he had been sent from God

to tell me that God had a work for me to do.

Listen to Russell M Nelson’s talk – Moving Forward

Listen to Russell M Nelson at a youth fireside below or read here. If you are watching you can skip to 15 min to hear President Nelson but the opening is beautiful.

Review your children’s Child and Youth Goals with them or set up a weekly counsel to discuss their goals and how you can support them as they strive to accomplish their goals and do what the Lord needs them to.

Plant a seed and talk about how long it takes to see the rewards of hard work, how important sun (Christ) and water (Faith) is or about roots. You could also read some books about plants to add in some more science or how we can be a gardener as we minister to others and allow others to help us thrive.

Read and learn about Emma Hale. Who was she, why did Joseph choose her for his wife, what trials were in her life.

Watch Emma Smith: My Story – I highly recommend watching it on DVD but if you can’t find a copy you can watch a mediocre version here on YouTube.

In the 1800’s treats were often simple, like a bowl of fresh popped popcorn over the fire. After a little bit of reading I learned that there is actually a lot to know about popcorn, its history is surprisingly massive. Today we are going to roast some popcorn kernels over our gas stove then munch away while watching some shows all about corn and popcorn. Never thought we would be diving into a lesson about popcorn but its going to be a tasty science lesson.

I don't understand what's happening in Ukraine. I' I don't understand what's happening in Ukraine. I've got the basics and a million more questions.

I'm not going to attempt to teach you about what is going on currently. I'm here to tell you that there is time to learn and grow in understanding.

As a homeschool mom, I've had a magnifying lens on what I don't completely understand. I could pretend to know answers, skip the hard topics or I could join the lessons.

Today I choose to join my kids and learn about the Soviet Union. After discussions with a friend I realized that it was a hole in my own education and it was stopping me from understanding current events.

We have a long ways to go but I understand more. I count that as a win.

How are you adding Ukraine into your life this week?

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr and Anne F Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr and Anne Frank were born in the same year?

These two faced discrimination based on their color and religion. They were treated as second class citizen's and both changed the world with their words. Reading about their similarities and the struggles they faced was eye opening and a great way to discuss how we are not alone in our trials.

"No one could kill the way Martin inspired others. Just as Anne's words will never die."

How do you teach your kids to do what is right even if the law tells them to behave otherwise?
