Morning Basket September 2020

September 15, 2020 by Side By Side Learning Leave a Comment

September is officially the start of our new school year. We never really stopped learning but our pace did slow down significantly and our days were much more relaxed and carefree. We enjoyed our summer slowdown but we are ready to jump into routine and regular school work. Our morning basket is the key to our routine.

Memory Work

Articles of Faith Flash Cards – We are still moving forward with our memorization. I am always surprised by how well children’s minds are ready and willing to memorize. They are little sponges and I love helping them absorb as much good as they are ready for.

Discussion Prompts

We are still doing using the 365 Questions and Answer Journal. I love our 3 year edition so we can look back on it and see the kids answers change. I am debating starting a journal entry a few times a week for our grade 2 student but I haven’t decided. If you do a regular journal writing, I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment with your experience.

Religious

The friend magazine is filled with articles from families around the world. It is a staple in our morning basket, most things change but this magazine will probably stay forever. Its that good.

One of our goals for the new school year is to focus a little bit more on becoming Christlike and focus on learning the doctrines of Christ.

Mindset Picture Books

Dear Girl/Dear Boy – This set is one of our kids favorites. They read them on repeat but I don’t often read them to our kids so I wanted to take the time to read them this month. I love Dear Girl/Boy because they don’t force stereotypes. Both genders are capable of anything they put their mind to and these books do a wonderful job of empowering kids to do and become who they want to be.

Bucket Filler – Now this book should really be on regular rotation in every home. We all need a reminder to be a Bucket Filler instead of a bucket dipper. How do you show love by adding others buckets which in turn fills your own bucket. We need a refresher on helping with the little things and being better teammates.

Unstoppable Me – You can do a bunch of things, its up to you! The boy in this story decides to use what he’s got to light the WORLD!

Unstoppable Me – Need helps to get through life? 10 Tips to get through life and not just survive but truly thrive.

Be A Star Wonder Woman – This picture book follows a little girl through her adventures at the playground. It turns a simple time at the jungle gym into an important mission to save others and be a good friend.

Back to School Picture Books

This Is My Home, This Is My School – I love this one because it doesn’t portray homeschooling as a picture perfect life. The illustrations and messaging is pretty realistic. Learning happens everywhere inside or outside the home. You don’t have to have the perfect set up. You just need to be intentional in your home and live your life and before you know it your kids are soaking up information everywhere they turn. Whenever I get caught up in comparisons or worried about my mothering skills, I just need a refresher of this book and then I am ready to jump in again.

Charlie Goes to School – Charlie is the sweetest family dog ever. He saw his family learning and decided to start his own school filled with the farm animals.

Chapter Books

Little House on the Prairie – We are currently half way through the second Little House on the Prairie Book. We lost a bit of steam during the summer but are excited to get back into it because *spoiler alert* we are headed into a Wild West unit and Little House on the Prairie will fit in perfectly.

I don't understand what's happening in Ukraine. I' I don't understand what's happening in Ukraine. I've got the basics and a million more questions.

I'm not going to attempt to teach you about what is going on currently. I'm here to tell you that there is time to learn and grow in understanding.

As a homeschool mom, I've had a magnifying lens on what I don't completely understand. I could pretend to know answers, skip the hard topics or I could join the lessons.

Today I choose to join my kids and learn about the Soviet Union. After discussions with a friend I realized that it was a hole in my own education and it was stopping me from understanding current events.

We have a long ways to go but I understand more. I count that as a win.

How are you adding Ukraine into your life this week?

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr and Anne F Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr and Anne Frank were born in the same year?

These two faced discrimination based on their color and religion. They were treated as second class citizen's and both changed the world with their words. Reading about their similarities and the struggles they faced was eye opening and a great way to discuss how we are not alone in our trials.

"No one could kill the way Martin inspired others. Just as Anne's words will never die."

How do you teach your kids to do what is right even if the law tells them to behave otherwise?
